FAQs

Fiber-Lite Custom Awnings

  • What types of awnings are available?

We offer a variety of awning styles to suit your needs. These include fixed-frame awnings, retractable awnings (both manual and motorized options), patio retractables, and canopy styles. Depending on your home's architecture, we can provide wall, roof, or soffit mounting solutions.
  • Do I need a building permit?

Permit requirements vary. Retractable awnings are often considered removable and typically don't require permits. However, fixed awnings may need one. It's important to note that local regulations or homeowners' association rules might impact the color, size, or placement of your awning.
  • How long does installation take?

Installation time depends on the size and complexity of the awning. For retractable awnings, the process usually takes between one to two hours.
  • What site preparations are needed?

Prior to installation, we need to ensure proper mounting height, typically between 7½ to 10 feet from the ground. We'll also check for adequate structural backing and clearance. We recommend professional measurement to guarantee a proper fit and avoid any potential errors.
  • What fabrics are available and how do they differ?

We offer several fabric options, each with unique properties. Acrylic is fade-resistant and breathable, while vinyl-coated polyester is waterproof and mildew-resistant. We also provide canvas and solution-dyed acrylic like Sunbrella for high UV resistance. Your choice will depend on your local climate conditions, including UV exposure, rainfall, humidity, and wind.
  • What about frame materials?

Our frames are built to last, typically constructed from either galvanized steel or aluminum. These materials are chosen for their durability and longevity.
  • Are awnings waterproof?

While our awning fabrics are water-repellent, they're not completely waterproof. They can handle light rain, but we recommend retracting them during heavy weather. Proper pitch in the awning design helps with water runoff.
  • How do I clean and maintain an awning?

Regular maintenance is key. We suggest cleaning your awning every two to three months, or at least seasonally. Start by brushing off debris, then wash with a mild soap and water solution. Rinse thoroughly and allow the awning to dry completely before retracting.
  • What inspections and upkeep are needed?

We recommend inspecting your awning in spring and fall. During these checks, tighten any loose hardware, examine fabric seams, and remove valances before winter if necessary. It's also important to lubricate moving parts and inspect mounts, grommets, and anchors as needed.
  • How do I protect it in winter or bad weather?

To protect your awning, retract it during high winds, storms, or heavy rain to prevent damage or water accumulation. In winter, use protective covers and consider removing or storing valances for added protection.
